On August 24, 1995, it launched a major online service, MSN (Microsoft Network), as a direct competitor to AOL. The success of the web caught them by surprise and they subsequently approached Spyglass to license their browser as Internet Explorer. The next update to the consumer line, Windows ME (or Windows Millennium Edition), was released on September 14, 2000.
